นิทานเรื่อง สุนัขกับหอยนางรม  (The Dog and the Oyster)

There was a dog who lived near the seashore. He used to eat eggs.

มีสุนัขตัวหนึ่งอาศัยอยู่บริเวณชายฝั่ง  มันเคยลิ้มลองรสชาดไข่มาก่อน 

Once he saw an Oyster and, opening his mouth to a very wide extent, swallowed it down, thought it was an egg. 

จนกระทั่งครั้งหนึ่งเมื่อมันเห็นหอยนางรม  มันจึงอ้าปากจนกว้างและกลืนหอยนางรมเข้าไป โดยคิดว่าสิ่งที่กินเข้าไปนั้นเป็นไข่ 

Soon afterwards suffering great pain in his stomach, he said, "I deserve all this pain, for my foolishness in thinking that everything round must be an egg." 

หลังจากนั้นไม่นานเจ้าหมาตัวหนี้รู้สึกปวดท้อง  มันกล่าวว่า “ฉันสมควรปวดท้องจริงๆ กับความโง่ของตัวเองที่คิดว่าทุกสิ่งรอบ ๆ ตัวจะต้องเป็นไข่” 

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

“They who act without adequate thought, will often fall into unsuspected danger.”

“ผู้ซึ่งกระทำการโดยขาดความยั้งคิดไตร่ตรองมักตกอยู่ในอันตราย”

A Hound started a Hare from his lair, but after a long run, gave up the chase. 

สุนัขเริ่มล่ากระต่ายจากถ้ำของมัน แต่หลังจากที่วิ่งอยู่นาน ก็ล้มเลิกการไล่ล่า 

A goat-herd seeing him stop, mocked him, saying “ The little one is the best runner of the two”. The Hound replied, “ You do not see the difference between us : I was only running for a dinner, but he for his life.” 

คนเลี้ยงแพะเมื่อเห็นเจ้าสุนัขหยุด ก็หัวเราะเยาะ พูดว่า “ระหว่างพวกเจ้า ผู้ที่ตัวเล็กคือผู้วิ่งที่ดีที่สุด” สุนัขตอบว่า “เจ้าไม่เห็นความแตกต่างระหว่างเรา ฉันวิ่งเพียงแค่ได้มื้อค่ำ แต่เขาวิ่งเพื่อรักษาชีวิตของเขา” 

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

A hen finding the eggs of a viper and carefully keeping them warm, nourished them into life.

แม่ไก่ตัวหนึ่งพบไข่งูพิษหลายฟอง มันนำไข่เหล่านั้นไปกกดูแลอย่างทะนุถนอม ให้ความอบอุ่นและดูแลเพื่อฟักเป็นตัวไข่พวกนั้น

A Swallow, observing what she had done, said, “You silly creature! why have you hatched these vipers which, when they shall have grown, will inflict injury on all, beginning with yourself?’

นกนางแอ่นตัวหนึ่งซึ่งเฝ้าดูอยู่ ร้องบอกแม่ไก่ตัวนั้นว่า “เจ้าไก่โง่ ! เหตุใดเจ้าจึงมัวฟักไข่งูพิษพวกนี้ เพราะเมื่อพวกมันโตขึ้นมา มันจะทำอันตรายทุกคนแล้วจะเริ่มต้นกับตัวเจ้าเป็นรายแรก”

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

 “If we nourish evil, it will sooner or later turn upon us.”

“หากเราหล่อเลี้ยงสิ่งชั่วร้ายไว้ สักวันหนึ่งสิ่งเหล่านี้จะกลับมาทำร้ายเรา”
